Automatic updates are a bad idea, due to how mod pages are set up, and the fact that some modders put their updates in a lower section on the page, so Vortex gives you the option to go to the mod page and choose which update you actually need.

I've never lost any mods with Vortex installs, and I've been using Vortex for a year. But I still backup everything. 1.Full release issues. Baldur's Gate 3 had a huge mod-breaking update on August 3rd 2023 when the game left early access. Some of the files that Vortex (and other mod managers) were relying on changed and have possibly become corrupted while we were updating our Vortex support for it.
