You will start off building a humble camp with basic necessities and temporary shelter, but in time you'll be able to expand into high-tech fortresses with complex defense systems and gadgets. I've intentionally delayed putting up defense towers, automated guns, etc and mobs have remained relatively small and pests not as powerful. There will be stronger mobs eventually, but there does seems to be some calculation to mob size & strength based upon your current defense strength.
