The purpose of the helicopter event is to lure millions of zombies to your area, thus adding more challenges and difficulty to the gameplay.

If you are outside during the helicopter event, the sound it produces will be pinpointed at you. So zombies will chase you specifically like it's personal for them. If you stay indoors whole the chopper is overhead - thd zombies will be pulled into your general area, but not to your specific location. So you can just sit it out.

If it didn't spot you, the sound will fade to nothing periodically before returning. If it spotted you, you'll always hear it near. If it didn't spot you it may pass/hover over you, but if it doesn't stay it didn't see you. Last time I successfully hid there would be periods where I couldn't hear it at all about every hour or so.
