LApm9 posted this 24 October 2022. I had a puzzling experience with my .45-70 reduced loads today and would appreciate any analysis of the situation that you may be able to offer. The bullet vendor offered a table of loads supposedly supplied by Lyman. The bullet is said to be Lyman #457130 (150 gr.).

The 2 that appear the most promising are H322 and H4198 or IMR4198. I had read someplace that one was better for the heavy bullets and the other was better for lighter - 300gr. It should give around ~1200/1400 fps in your rifle. I have used it in one of my 45/70's but, not by itself, I used it as a priming charge for 4831, for a better loading density. Jun 21, 2006 · I use H4198 behind a 405 gr. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! I think IMR-4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it. Pretty good powder for the .45-70 IMHO.

About 24-25 grains of 2400 powder approximates the original black powder velocities with a 400 grain bullet. I like 11 grains of Unique behind a 500 gr Lee boolit, my crony says 1100+FPS. Great load in my Sharps and my Pedesorli Rem. Not sure how it will work in 45/70 but found BD works well in 30/40 and 30/06 using max load of UNIQUE as a starting load, and starting load of 2400 as max.
