Pyromancy is more of a supplementary skill rather than a primary one like sorcery or hexes. I use pyromancy to a great extent to augment my melee warrior, and it's great for PvE and against most bosses. But I get absolutely rekt against anyone in a cage-match who uses straight sorceries in PvP.
