Try the following settings for an immersive experience! Survivor Spawn Rate: Extremely Low. This greatly reduces the lag. You'll find 5-7 survivors in a town depending on the size of the town. Disable All Pre-set/Unique Survivors: On. If this is off, it'll add a bunch of survivors causing lag, it's also somewhat buggy.

It all depends on your needs and population settings. I can't give universal advice, but I can recommend debuffs that don't have such a bad effect on your character (I usually take them): Clumsy, Conspicuous, Cowardly, Hearty Appetite, High Thirst, Pacifist, Short Sighted, Smoker, Slow reading (if reading is accelerated in the world settings ...Lucky trait does seem to help in future campaigns from my experience.
